What Never Was is a maternity photo in honor of women who have never been able to experience pregnancy or carry a pregnancy to live birth. As someone who can’t carry to term, I wanted to have my own maternity shoot, but in a method that showed an empty womb, a pseudo pregnancy. It’s a symbol of that lost child and lost experience, something that feels like it should come natural. The stomach was modeled after the plaster cast of a friend’s pregnancy, created using clear urethane casting resin.
