Pam Francis: Photographs is on view @blafferartmus Pam Francis: Photographs is on view @blafferartmuseum through April 26th so you have two days left to see it since they are closed on Mondays. Go see and share some photos! I am unfortunately out of state the entire run of the exhibition that I was looking forward to seeing for over a year!😭

I have a stunning copy of the accompanying book though. I was honored to have the opportunity to write an essay about Pam Francis’ photography for the book. This is my first published essay and I hope it won’t be my last. I thoroughly enjoyed the process and researching Pam Francis and her photographic techniques. It amazes me that the Houston creative community is so broad that we never had the opportunity to meet before her passing, but it’s not surprising in such a big city with so many overlapping yet divergent art communities. I’m thankful to have had the opportunity to learn about her and a big thank you to Christine Starkman for including me and working so hard to curate the exhibition and create this comprehensive book on Pam Francis’ photography and life. Now you have the opportunity to see her portrait photography in person for just two more days! Go see it!

Y’all. I just bought this vintage 1950s Japanese Y’all. I just bought this vintage 1950s Japanese subminiature spy camera at an estate sale and I’m all about it today. It’s completely functional and I need to figure out how to get some film in it.😍🎞📷

When I was earning my master’s degree, I took a When I was earning my master’s degree, I took a number of photo history and seminar courses from Dr. David Lee Jacobs. One of the things I loved was that he brought in stereoscopes, daguerreotypes, ambrotypes etc. from his personal collection so we could see and touch historical photographic processes and photographic instruments. It wasn’t just something we looked at in books or museums. I also loved the oddities he showed such as post mortem portraits or hand tinted “pornographic” daguerreotypes. He passed away in September 2021 and I’ve honestly been a little perplexed by the lack of eulogies within the various communities he’s been a part of over his life (with the exception of the society for photographic education). Regardless, that does not change the ways he’s affected his students over a long career in education. I recently purchased a stereoscope with David in mind. I hope to one day have a personal collection as well that I can share with my photography students to bridge that gap between learning and experiencing history. ❤️
We did a thing. Well, we are in the process of doi We did a thing. Well, we are in the process of doing a thing. We started a thing. 😬

Prince and I bought part of Butch Jack’s property and are building our dream live/work space out of this metal building. It’s going to be a long and scary process, but in the end, no more losing studios to rent increases, no more moving art storage around. I am looking forward to going through it all with @princevthomas_art and to have awesome neighbors who we already know and love! It’s as close as I can get to my dream commune scenario within the city. 😂 I’ll post the occasional update over the next few years* as we make progress.
I haven’t shared in a while, so here is an in-pr I haven’t shared in a while, so here is an in-progress post. I started collecting business logos for companies with “patriot” in the title and altering them so that “patriot” was the only word. I am up to 162 altered logos and counting. It’s a good way to zone out 😂. My favorites are the ones that still show an identifiable trade. I only have 5 stamps, testing the idea out as a stamp and seeing what I could do with it. I am still contemplating and resolving what I want to do with these logos. I’m interested in the idea of manufactured patriotism, paid patriotism, how American patriotism is unique, how the term is used to signal to others what type of person you are, how it works like a Barnum statement when used, able to fit everyone’s widely varying definition of what a patriot is to them. Lots to work on still!

This is an international maritime flag that I crea This is an international maritime flag that I created from two deconstructed G-Spec U.S. internment flags. G-Spec stands for “government specified” and the designation means that it meets certain requirements per Title 4 of the U.S.C. in order to be used as an internment flag in official ceremonies. The maritime flag that I created is the “U” (Uniform) flag. When flown alone, it is a warning flag meaning “You are standing into danger.” That also is the title.

I can’t say there was one particular inspiration for this flag when I started working through the idea in 2020. It’s been a year of reflection on so many aspects of how we are handling ourselves as a nation. One thing I can say for sure is that while I was initially deconstructing the flags, the January 6th storming of the capital was taking place. It was surreal to be sitting in my studio watching the live coverage as I was taking apart the symbol of our union. I was also surprised by how it felt to take apart the flag.

I know I need better documentation. I want to set the flag against something that isn’t a white wall so the colors can pop. The ladder gives scale.
