I’m Back Baby!

March 27, 2015

After taking time off from art-making and entering the public school system as an elementary school teacher, I made a swift exit and am happy to say I am now back in the studio making art. I have such an appreciation for teachers now and the sacrifices that they make in the name of their students. If you have a kid in school, I hope you are giving their teachers love and respect (and maybe a massage gift certificate). It really is a thankless job that I could write on forever. My husband and I spent the month after I resigned cleaning our studio and making it a functioning space. It looks amazing! I am really excited about what I am working on and I am brimming with ideas and a few soon-to-be disclosed projects. Thank you for visiting my website and stay posted for updates in the next month or so as things start to come together.

Life Changes Abound

January 29, 2014

I begin 2014 with a new name, a new home, and a new family. These past few months have consisted of a long series of life changes,  some good, some bad. We lost one of my dearest friends suddenly and unexpectedly. A few weeks later, my uncle passed away after nearly two years of battling cancer, leaving behind a wife and four young daughters. Two days after that, my husband and I were married. After a honeymoon to our nation’s capital, we returned to Houston and started the process of moving me in with him and his parents. Presently, I am adapting to living with my in-laws and bridging the language/culture gap between us. I am also adjusting to the temporary lack of studio space. I am without a creative home until May, but am slowly working on making a stopgap space at home. I can’t wait to fall back into some form of routine/normality!

Screen Kiss

July 23, 2013

Playback received just a little more press before it closed. Beloved art blogger, Robert Boyd, wrote about my recent show on his blog, The Great God Pan Is Dead. The link goes straight to the entry on my show. I thought all of his evaluations were spot on. I was elated at how spot-on he was with his interpretations. An artist can only hope that someone will look at his or her work and read it as intended. The show has closed, but you can watch most of the videos on this website.

Classic Film Tropes Cleverly on Repeat in “Playback”

June 25, 2013

My opening at Fresh Arts in Houston was this past Friday. I was very pleased with the turnout as well as the favorable responses. There is nothing more uplifting in an artist’s career than when someone looks at their artwork and fully understands and engages in it. Not only was my exhibition promoted by Glasstire.com as one of the top 5 shows to see in Texas last week, the show also received a great review by Meredith Deliso: Classic Film Tropes Cleverly on Repeat in “Playback”. If you were unable to attend the opening, it is up through July 12th, 2013.

Scream Queens Press

May 23, 2013

I recently came across a review written by Aaron Bielich for Gulf Coast, a journal of literature and fine art. It covers the group show I was in that was curated by Sapphire Williams this past Spring (Present Tense). Here is the link if you would like to read it: Repetition, Variation, Connection.

You can see more images from the entire Present Tense exhibition (in addition to images from the other four exhibitions and installations on view at the same time) at Lawndale Art Center’s Flickr Page for January 25, 3013 – March 2, 2013 Exhibitions.

Silent Disco Success!

October 02, 2012

The 27th has passed and there is no more Silent Disco. Saddness, I know. However, I have 75 Gigabytes of footage to now shuffle through to compile my final video from the event. While I am a little worried about the audio due to all the fans that were on, I am more than certain the footage was golden. Thank you to everyone who came out and participated. A big thanks as well to all my volunteers. Ya’ll made things run so smoothly! I will let you know about show dates for the video as soon as I can get through this new massive editing project. However, in the meantime, I am in need of actresses for my next video piece that I will start shooting next month. A new flyer is soon to come. If you are interested, fill in the contact form!

Thank you to Sara Peacock for taking this photo!

ARE YOU READY TO DANCE!?

September 06, 2012

Thursday, September 27th,

8pm @ Numbers Night Club

In fulfillment of my HAA individual artist grant, I am creating a video piece utilizing silent disco technology. I am documenting the physical interactions between people in a club/party atmosphere without the distraction of music. A silent disco is a dance party event in which a disc jockey uses an FM-transmitter instead of speakers to broadcast beats into wireless headphones worn by attendees. Omitting the music will speculatively make any movement look foreign to bystanders by eliminating the beat commonly coupled with club dancing. It will also place focus on overpowered peripheral sounds such as of jostling clothes, feet scuffing the floor and many unforeseeable noises produced by attendees.

If you are interested in being in the video and hearing some great music by Echoplex (Peter Lucas), Gracie Chavez and Navó (Bombón), DJ Ipod Ammo, and DJ Sun, please come and dance the night away! Doors open at 8pm. $5 cover unless you contact me to get on the list or bring an official event card. There are only 200 headphones so come early! There are no guarantees that you will get in if you show up late!

Breathe Wraps Up

July 04, 2012

My show in the upstairs gallery at Box13 Art Space just wrapped up last week. If you missed it, I will upload some video documentation of the installation as well as the actual videos very soon. In addition to this news, I have a large silent disco event approaching September 27th (as part of my HAA grant) as well as a three-person exhibition at Sam Houston State University in September. It’s my first visiting lecturer/critic opportunity as well so I am very excited! In the meantime, I am moving into a new house with a much larger studio in the next week or so before I head off to Los Angeles and San Francisco. Unfortunately, it means I will move from Box13 Art Space. All in all, a lot of flux. Check back soon for further updates on all these events!

HAA 2012 Individual Artist Grant Recipient

May 20, 2012

Good news! I am officially a 2012 Houston Arts Alliance grant recipient! I was awarded money to carryout a proposed video project. Utilizing silent disco technology, I will create a video documenting the physical interactions between people in a club/party atmosphere.

The public is invited to participate in the event and view the resulting video through a separate exhibition. I will keep updating the blog as dates and locations are set!

My First Gender-Bending Review!

May 07, 2012

Kristy Peet and Britt Ragsdale’s Body Talk at Gallery 1724

I love that I am able to be both a man and woman due to my shortened name (yes, I am a Brittney, click the link above to read what I mean). I always thought my art screamed “A WOMAN MADE THIS!”, but I am glad to see that it is not as apparent as I first thought. I believe this reviewer had some fair criticism of both the place and art. Please read, and then go see my photographs if your are in Houston. Also, I am far from done with this series. I am still making studies for larger pieces. So if you are interested in modeling and will be in Southeast Texas, please fill out my contact form. I don’t pay people (starving artist), but I will provide water, snacks and awkward entertainment.
